Best management practice for double cropping in the 2000s

ICF, with the support of GRDC, has prepared a best management practice guide for double cropping in northern Victoria.

Double cropping provides an opportunity for irrigators to capitalise on their investment in irrigation infrastructure and improve their profitability and water use efficiency.

This guide is based on the experience and knowledge of long-term double croppers and their advisors, and the results of a double cropping field trial conducted 2006–08. It also includes gross margins for the recommended crops, where the opportunity cost of water is considered.

Developments in plant breeding, stubble management and sowing technology, and new markets for fodder, to name a few, have overcome issues previously considered barriers to double cropping in northern Victoria.
